Benefits of Frankincense

Posted by Alexa Hoffman on

Frankincense is a beautiful essential oil and one of our personal favorites.

Frankincense essential oil is made from steam-distillation of the Boswellia tree resin. The aroma is earthy and woody, yet fresh. Those who may not enjoy other earthy essential oils such as Patchouli or Cedarwood, will most likely find this oil pleasing in aroma. Frankincense has a long history throughout time as being used in spiritual practices as well as in perfumes. Frankincense has a particular affinity to the nervous system, skin and respiratory system.

*Since Frankincense is a near-threatened conservation status, I prefer to use mostly for emotional/spiritual benefits, as well as some specific skin issues, since there are so many other amazing essential oils that benefit our respiratory system.

As a long-time yoga and meditation practitioner, I love using this oil before my  practice. It allows me to feel grounded and open to receiving all the benefits of yoga and meditation. I also personally feel more calm and less anxious after taking a few deep breathes inhaling this oil. Frankincense helps us build the mind-body-spirit connection and allows us to deepen our spiritual practice, whatever that means for us individually.

In terms of Ayurveda, Frankincense essential oil is helpful for Vata imbalances, such as anxiety and fear, as well as cooling to Pitta imbalances, such as anger, stress or burnout. Frankincense blends well with lavender and citrus oils, as well as other woody aromas.

Benefits of Frankincense Essential Oil

  • Emotional Healing
  • Anxiety and Tension
  • Promotes tranquility
  • Encourages reflection and introspection
  • Good for wound healing (after stitches)
  • Soothes inflamed skin conditions (acne, eczema, etc.

We could all become a bit more mindful and conscious these days, to better our own wellness and that of those around us. Frankincense is a lovely oil to incorporate into your life and your meditation practice. Try misting our Ritual Spritz or diffusing our Soothe Blend before you begin your yoga and meditation practice to feel grounded, calm and secure.
