Benefits of Clary Sage Essential Oil

Posted by Alexa Hoffman on

Salvia sclarea, commonly known as clary sage, has an affinity to the female reproductive system, the nervous system and the musculoskeletal system. The name clary sage, comes from the latin word "clarus" which means clarity or cleansing. The aroma of clary sage is floral, earthy and herbaceous.

Clary sage essential oil is created from the flowering tops of the plant and distilled. In Ayurveda, clary sage is useful for a vata or pitta imbalance. Feeling restless or anxious or maybe irritability and frustrated? Clary sage is calming and grounding to these emotions and states of mind.

Clary sage is also balancing to women; no matter the age or time of life. It is helpful for everything from PMS, hormonal imbalance, irregular periods and menopause as well as promotes healing during the postpartum phase and helpful for postpartum depression. Clary sage is a uterine relaxant and is not recommended for use during pregnancy; however, it is a great oil to have during labor and throughout the postpartum phase.

Clary sage helps bring balance to emotional states and has a euphoric and calming aroma. This powerful oil tends to be stronger in scent so it is usually blended with other oils such as bergamot, lavender and/or patchouli. If using on its own, just a few drops will be more than enough to blend into a carrier oil and/or to diffuse in your space.

Aside from the nervous system and female reproductive system benefits, it is also good for our musculoskeletal system. Arthritis, muscle aches and pains, as well as cramps can all benefit from topical applications of this essential oil (just remember to dilute in carrier oil before applying to the skin!)

Ways to use Clary Sage Essential Oil

  • Mist Evening Spritz onto your face and body nightly to balance the mood.
  • Support hormones throughout your cycle with Queen Roller Blend. Apply to pulse point or directly to the abdomen.
  • Keep Moon Roller Blend on your nightstand to rub into your palms and take several deep breaths to breath in the calming aroma of Clary Sage before rest.

Clary sage is a beloved oil of ours, specifically in products in our line that support women's health and wellness. It is an oil that I use often when making custom blends and supporting women during different phases such as menopause or postpartum; the evening spritz is also a product I use daily for a moment of balance. Our roller blends that feature Clary Sage, Moon and Queen, are easy ways to incorporate this essential into your self-care and wellness routine on the go. Clary Sage is a beautiful oil to reduce stress, balance hormones and calm body and mind.

What is Ayurveda?

The three main focuses of Ayurveda are: to heal, to prevent and to maintain. A unique point to Ayurveda is the individualized approach: the imbalance or disease might be the same, but the approach to heal is going to be different for every person based on their unique mind-body type. Another unique detail to Ayurveda, is that what we eat greatly affects our mind, mood and emotions.
